I wish everyone (and especially our hypocritical politicians) would read a very astute, accurate article in the July 11, 2011 Time Magazine. I came across it last week while in the doctor’s waiting room. Entitled "The Way Forward" and written by book author and New York University teacher Jorge G. Castaneda, the article speaks to the drug wars in Mexico and their relation to U.S. politics, as well as setting forth painfully obvious changes that could end the problems.
The piece is very comprehensive but I will get to the part that says the most important thing: it points to the U.S. nature (which the author says the U.S. cannot/will not change ... and I agree) and the U.S. politics (which the author hopes will change ... and so do I) regarding the ridiculous "war on drugs" and the illegality of marijuana. He advocates (and so do I) the legalization of marijuana and possibly other drugs. Many great minds of our time, including George Shultz and Paul Volcker, Mr. Castaneda tells us, support legalization; so do U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, our former president Jimmy Carter, and several Mexican ex-presidents. The onus is on Obama and our federal legislators to legalize the valuable and multi-use cannabis (its real name) plant for medicinal and recreational use. This action would deflate the drug cartel, end the (unConstitutional) search and property seizures, end the imprisoning of marijuana growers and users, and stop wasting American tax dollars.
I would really like to see this legalization in my lifetime ... so you'd better hurry, Mr. President and D.C. people. I'm an herbalist and I believe it is a travesty that this Nature-given herb is not allowed to be grown for its many industrial uses and medicinal virtues.
It is time! And the article is in Time. Just in time.
